Dick Butkus can’t stand sports and steroids to mentioned in the same breath. He says it disgusts him. In the midst of the steroid controversy in the Major leagues he took the initiative of starting the campaign to clean up sports of the performance enhancing drug. His campaign “I Play Clean” targets high-school students. Especially since the use of the drugs have trickled down to the adolescents. He’s been to be a fury on the field, so these days he just focuses on advocacies against steroids.
Baseball isn’t the only one cheating to win. NFL is guilt of that too. But contrary to what Butkus fear that they might face the Senate and get questioned about steroids, it is not likely to happen. Unlike baseball, football players are expected to use steroids. With their muscles and all, it would be a surprise if one of them didn’t.
From Reuters:
“It just disgusts me and I hope it doesn’t come to a point where I’m sitting there watching a Senate hearing and have them drilling some ex-football players on their steroids habit,” he said, referring to baseball’s appearance before Congress. “I want to lick this before that happens.”
The NFL has had its share of steroids cheats, notably San Diego Chargers Pro-Bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman, suspended for four games in 2006, and now-retired 1997 Defensive Player of the Year Dana Stubblefield, sentenced last month to two years’ probation for lying to investigators about his steroid use.
After retiring from the NFL in 1973 due to a five-way bypass, Dick Butkus had dedicated himself to medical advocacies. He joined the board of a medical center that paved the way for Dick Butkus for Cardiovascular Wellness.
