Troy Glaus admitted that he had injected himself with steroids 3 times in a week to aid in the speedy recovery of his shoulder injury. This admission appeared in a report that was published by The New York Times on Sunday. The Cardinals’ third baseman had been named as one of the MLB players who received a prescription from Ramon Scruggs, 62 who was an anti-aging doctor. The physician had issued the prescription without seeing Glaus. Scruggs was also suspected to be supplying illegal prescriptions to other baseball players, businessmen and cops.
John Mozeliak, the team manager of the Cardinals said that Glaus had used steroids while he was with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2003-04. He said that he was going to speak with Glaus while they were in Arizona. He will have his rehab in Phoenix for an injury located near the previous one.
From STLToday:
Cardinal’s general manager John Mozeliak will accompany the team to Arizona tonight and plans to discuss the matter further with Glaus during the Cardinals’ three-day stay.
The connection between Glaus’ reported steroid use and his previous rehab is cause for concern, Mozeliak allowed.
“Anytime something like this resurfaces in the context of him currently going through rehab, it’s concerning. We’re still hopeful it’s something he can work through and at the end it’s unrelated,” Mozeliak said.
Mozeliak said he was unaware of any potential discipline that might accompany Saturday’s report and said the club was primarily concerned about the tie between a past rehab and performance-enhancing drugs.
“If this was used previously, there has to be concern,” Mozeliak said. “Hopefully those concerns will go away with him getting back on the field.”
In defense, Glaus said he used steroids so that he could get back into the game the soonest possible time because he couldn’t risk not playing for the season.
Steroids are not illegal when used clinically. However, because some users tend to abuse the substance it has been considered banned in most professional sports.
