Rumors are circulating that results of the drug tests during the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis had leaked and several players were tested positive for recreational and performance enhancing drugs. Those named were highly respected USC linebackers Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews Jr., allegedly positive on steroids. Other players whose names were included on the list were Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis, Florida’s wide receiver Percy Harvin, and Boston College defensive tackle BJ Raji, tested positive for marijuana.
The league denied the allegations and said that the results of the drug testing during the combine were highly confidential. Those who knew were limited to the medical supervisors and the players, who were mailed the results. Even NFL officials themselves said that they were not privy to the outcome of the tests.
From The USA Today:
A string of denials and admonishments followed the NFLDraftBible.com stories, particularly in defense of the USC linebackers.
USC coach Pete Carroll called the report “absolutely false.” He told the L.A. Times, “This is an [sic] major example of irresponsible reporting, and the site that published this report should be ashamed of themselves.”
Cushing’s agent, Tom Condon refuted the story and called it a “vicious and false rumor.” Matthews‘ agent, Mark Humenik, called for NFLDraftBible.com to retract the report, which he called a “grossly irresponsible and unfair accusation.” As of late Sunday, there had been no change in the reporting by NFLDraftBible.com.
Davis’ agent issed a similar denial. “Neither Vontae nor our office has received any notification of any positive test whether for marijuana or any other banned substance,” the agent, Todd France, told the Rockford Register Star.
The NFL Scouting Combine happens yearly on the month of February. This is a weeklong event where physical and mental tests are administered in front of NFL coaches, general managers and scouts. This the time of the year where agents do everything to get their player drafted even to the point of lying. The league then cautions that any rumor should be investigated. False reports are not fair for the players and their families.
