The 27-year-old sprinter from Britain competed at the European Indoor Championships and tested positive for two anabolic steroids.

From Spaldingtoday.co.uk:

Wilson had blamed a contaminated sample for her positive test for banned steroids testosterone and clenbuterol.

UK Anti-Doping chief Andy Parkinson said: “This sends a strong message to anyone looking to dope in the UK.”

Wilson won the Commonwealth Games 100m trials in 2010 only to miss out on a place in the England squad due to not meeting the qualifying time

She issued a statement in July calling for UK Anti-Doping, who administer drug testing in the UK, to withdraw the case and open an internal investigation to determine the cause of the contamination.

However, an independent National Anti-Doping Panel upheld the European Indoor 60m semi-finalist’s four-year ban.

Parkinson added: “We have successfully argued for a four-year ban which demonstrates that UK Anti-Doping always seeks robust sanctions against athletes who look to cheat the system and betray those around them.”

However, there was no confirmation on the exact reason of suspension and whether it was for violating the substance abuse policy ((drugs, narcotics, etc.) or the steroid and related substances policy (HGH, anabolic steroids, etc.).

From Behindthesteelcurtain.com:

The NFL has run into this issue in the past - with a player currently on the Steelers roster.

As Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer prepared for the draft in 2010, his agent, Robert London, notified every NFL team that his client took Adderall - a medication for attention deficit disorder (ADD) - which is amphetamine salts. London told teams that Dwyer’s drug test would come back positive for amphetamines.

Dwyer’s test came back positive, as predicted. The league considers it to be a therapeutic exemption though if the player has the proper prescriptions for the medication (as a Schedule II Controlled Substance in the United States, you cannot possess it without a prescription, and that prescription must be hand-written from a doctor).

It is believed that a positive test of Saunders came not from PEDs or drugs, but a therapeutic drug that included an ingredient on the league’s list of banned substances.

However, this goal may mean some players resort to unethical behaviors, such as taking performance enhancing drugs (PED).

From My.hsj.org:

According to the IHSA, a baseball team is eligible for random drug testing once they reach regionals. The penalty for a positive test is a forfeit of player eligibility for a full year and any individual awards.

Varsity head baseball coach Darren Orel feels that there are problems with this current IHSA policy.

According to Orel, taking PEDs without getting caught would “probably not be too difficult because it’s so random. If you look at all the teams in all the regionals and in all the different levels, the odds are probably small to get caught. I’m sure if they want to [use PEDs], they can get away with it. It isn’t easy, but fairly easy.”

The slim chance of being caught, under the IHSA policy, along with the recent suspicion that Milwaukee Brewer left fielder and reigning National League Most Valuable Player (NL MVP) Ryan Braun tested positive for PED use but escaped consequences enhances the temptation.

According to the Steroid Abuse organization, anabolic steroids are “synthetic versions of the male sex hormone testosterone. Testosterone, along with the synthetic steroids, has anabolic and androgenic characteristics. The anabolic effects are those that involve the growth of lean muscle mass and the androgenic effects are those having to do with male gender characteristics.”

Deluca, founder of the online fitness and bodybuilding company, also agreed in a plea deal for paying a fine of $500,000 for the company’s sale of five products between 2007 and 2009 that contained synthetic anabolic steroids or chemical clones of steroids.

DeLuca, 34, acknowledged the five products — I Force Methadrol, Nutra Costal D-Stianozol, I Force Dymethazine, Rage RV5 and Genetic Edge Technologies SUS500 — were drugs sold improperly under the label of “dietary supplements.”

The company generated $1.8 million through the first seven and a half months of 2009 from the falsely labeled products and other similar substances, according to court records.

Each of the five misdemeanor violations of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act carries up to a year in prison, but in the plea bargain, prosecutors are recommending probation.

Federal officials raided the company’s headquarters in 2009 following a two-year investigation that involved a special agent for the FDA buying 23 products from the company that tested positive for anabolic steroids.

DeLuca will be sentenced in a U.S. District Court in Boise on June 20.

It’s the first time, in our recollection, that the league has acknowledged a willingness to allow baseline testing of NFL players to be utilized in order to determine the appropriate naturally-occurring HGH threshold. The NFLPA consistently has expressed concern that the minimum amounts determined by testing Olympic athletes will not correlate to pro football players.

The flaw in this reasoning, of course, is that to the extent NFL players who are included in the baseline testing are using HGH, the threshold will be artificially inflated, giving players an HGH buffer zone.

Equally as confusing as the players’ reluctance to follow through with their agreement has been the NFL’s failure to take steps to enforce it. And this invites speculation that the NFL has realized that HGH testing could put too many players on the sidelines, and that the league is simply walking the P.R. tightrope between pretending to care about HGH and actually removing from the sport the men who are using it.

“Let me put it that way. We are prepared to do that if that resolves the issue. I sent an e-mail to [NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith] before I left, and unfortunately, our meetings sort of crossed, but HGH was on that list and I expect by the end of the week I will be speaking to him about it again,” NFL Commissioner added.

The fourth sailor was sacked after repeated offences involving alcohol abuse were followed by a positive steroid test. The fifth returned a positive drug test for steroids and was immediately dismissed.

Steroid abuse is widespread in the military and investigators have been targeting physical training instructors who have been among the most common suppliers of anabolic steroids to troops and sailors.

Navy chief Vice-Admiral Russ Crane said all of the sailors had been dismissed; the navy has a zero tolerance policy on illicit substances.

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) has revealed that more than 6,000 schoolchildren aged 11 to 15 have admitted to regularly taking the physique enhancing drugs.

The statistics have renewed fears that teens are getting prematurely concerned with their appearance.

From Telegraph.co.uk:

The ACMD said there has been an increase in use of steroids across all ages and yesterday called for a ban on internet sales of the drugs to curb supply.

The abuse of steroids was highlighted earlier this year when relatives of killer Raoul Moat said the 37-year-old ex-nightclub bouncer, who went on a shooting spree in Northumberland and declared war on the police, was addicted to the muscle-building drugs and prone to “unpredictable” eruptions of anger.

Professor Les Iversen, chairman of the ACMD, said: “Surveys of young people indicate that a small, but significant, number of 11-15 year olds take anabolic steroids.

“This is particularly worrying because steroid use could interfere with their normal growth and sexual development.

“It is possible that young users are motivated by the same considerations as older people, namely a desire to enhance ‘body image’.”
