This is a glimpse of the past. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the man who has been deemed to be one of those blessed with the perfect male body, had admitted to using anabolic steroids during his younger days. This isn’t really much of a secret and he hasn’t been reprimanded for such since back in the 1960s or so, steroids were legal. According to Arnold, the drugs helped him more on maintaining his muscles and cutting. He used a strict diet and exercise regimen for the muscle growth part. This old news seems rather ironic as the now governor of California is asking athletes not to use anabolic steroids and performance enhancing drugs.
From Daily News:
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says super star athletes worshipped by young fans have no choice but to be role models and understand that steroid use is the wrong message for kids.
The former world champion body-builder made the comment on CNN’s Sunday news and talk show, “State of the Union,” though he opted not to single out Yankees star Alex Rodriquez, or address the use of steroids among competitors during the “Pumping Iron” era that put Schwarzenegger on Hollywood’s radar screen.
“I think it’s important to get the message out that we should not use drugs. I think we have a certain obligation as athletes to inspire young people. When someone wins an Olympic championship or a boxing championship, whatever it may be, you’re not only a champion, but you’re also an inspirational vehicle for young kids and for people in general to stay fit, to lose weight and all of this,” he said.
While the purpose of this anti-steroid advocacy Arnold suddenly took, many critiques feel that he is being a hypocrite. Amidst this, Arnold believes that it is important for these athlete role models to act the part as the youth’s idols. They should send out a message that tells the youth not to use drugs and alcohol.
