Law enforcement agencies intent on keeping their agency drug-free

Several Sheriff’s offices in Florida are implementing drug policy law among their employees. This is to maintain the integrity of their respective agencies. They would want their agencies to be drug-free workplaces.

Last January, Sheriff Michael Adkinson took office at the Walton County Sheriff’s office. He immediately ordered a random drug screening to be implemented in the workplace.

Since the new policy has been implemented earlier this month, 20 employees from the executive staff, supervisors, dispatchers, investigators, and support personnel were randomly tested.

The computer generates a list of employees to be tested every month. They are then given an hour to be tested after being notified.

At the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, they made at a requirement that each applicant must be able to pass drug testing before being accepted for employment. Employees must also undergo random drug and alcohol testing every year, according to the agency’s drug policy order.

Similar to Walton County’s system, a computer generates the names of employees to be tested; however, only 10 employees are being tested each month.

Meanwhile, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office also implemented similar drug testing policy for their employees.

From The Destin Log:

Similar policies are in place throughout Florida. While some positive results have prompted the dismissal or resignation of investigators and other employees, it has also helped clear the names of some.
