It is seldom that one can find an athlete in professional sports admitting to steroid or marijuana use. There is Alex Rodriguez whose confession came after the positive result of the drug tests leaked to the press. He was simply being humble. After all, he could not do anything about it; the cat was out of the bag. He might as well admit that he was guilty. Mixed martial artist Nick Diaz is different. He is honest. He does not need to be tested discreetly for drugs, on the contrary, ask him if he uses drugs and he would openly discuss it.
Diaz does not deny the fact that he uses cannabis and enjoys the effects it has on his body. He was even candid to say that he knows how to deal with drug tests, which at this point would be useless. His detox regimen includes downing tons of herbal cleansers, loads up on water and makes it a point to sweat profusely to excrete the toxins out of his body. According to Diaz, marijuana is better than steroids.
From The LA Times:
What Diaz brings beyond flying fists and the ability to shut off a foe’s breathing by holding the opponent’s throat against his bottom leg is unbending honesty about his marijuana use, his frustration with his former bosses at the Ultimate Fighting Championship and his belief that steroids are pervasive in his sport.
“Let ‘em do it, they’ll have a shorter career than me,” said Diaz (18-7 with 10 knockouts, five submissions and a no-contest). “With all that wear and tear on their tendons, something’s going to explode. I feel like these guys are hurting themselves. You can’t consistently fight on steroids.”
The state athletic commission has considered marijuana to be a banned substance. Diaz had actually been suspended and fined in 2007 for using it before his fight with Takanori Gomi of Japan. Now he is set to fight Frank Shamrock in what is considered a very important fight because he believes that fighting with Diaz can give the viewers much MMA action and excitement that can surpass the UFC. However, Keith Kizer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission says that Diaz will be tested prior to Saturday’s game.
