As per a recent study, women in their older age and suffering from osteoporosis can be relieved of pain when administered with steroids.
It was revealed that osteoporosis can be cured by low doses of the steroids. New researches by scientists have shown that this disability is caused by low levels of estrogen in the body. Therefore, a patient can be given low doses of estrogen to increase bone density in women without causing any side effects.
It was found that hormone therapy while including one quarter of the dose of estrogen to the patient work to a great extent, as reported by the University of Connecticut. The studies were taken in account with the effects showing in 167 women older than 65 years of age.
FROM BIO MEDICINE:
Osteoporosis is a major cause of disability in older women. Estrogen therapy is often prescribed to prevent osteoporosis. However, many women are reluctant to take hormone therapy because of the increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and deep vein blood clots. Now, new research finds a lower dosage of estrogen increases bone density in women without possibly causing the problems typically associated with the standard dose of estrogen therapy.
Women under examination were randomly assigned to receive smaller amounts of estrogen or placebo. Researchers kept account of the bone mineral density of the hip, spine, wrist and the total body parts, every year for three years. They also kept an eye at the markers for bone formation during the study.
At all the sites measured women who were on the low dose of estrogen showed an increase in their bone mineral densities. There was also a significant decrease in the bone loss in women who were studied and administered with low doses of estrogen.
Researchers concluded that low doses of estrogen can prove to be really helpful in increasing bone densities of osteoporosis patients.
