Roger Clemens is probably at the edge of his seat upon hearing the latest news involving his case. Although the meeting was supposed to be kept confidential, an anonymous source has reported that Andy Pettitte has met with the federal prosecutors in charge of indicting Roger Clemens on perjury charges. Pettitte was one of Clemens close friends but due to the steroid drama, this friendship was tainted. He was one of Clemens’ teammates who had been closely linked to the scandal. Pettitte did exactly the opposite of what Clemens had done. He admitted to using human growth hormone several times including press conferences and before the Congress. What Pettitte had done led to boosting of trainer Brian McNamee’s credibility and this is an important factor in the Clemens case. McNamee was the one who pointed out that Clemens had used steroids and human growth hormone— claims that Clemens continues to deny.
From The New York Times:
Pettitte did not testify at the Congressional hearing last February in which Clemens and McNamee contradicted each other. But Pettitte provided a written statement under oath to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in which he said that Clemens admitted to him in 1999 or 2000 that he had used H.G.H.
Pettitte said that he told his wife about that conversation. His wife, Laura Pettitte, also provided a written statement under oath to the committee in which she confirmed the conversation with her husband.
There are still no details on what was discussed during Pettitte’s meeting with the prosecutors. The United States attorney’s office still has not commented on the issue.
