It is right to say that steroids usage is making a deep impact on our society and the most effected group is young men, who in desire of muscular body shape use these drugs on a very high note. The proof of this statement was given by a survey done by DrugScope, a charity organization.
The survey was conducted in 20 towns and cities of England, out of which in about 11 regions use of steroids occurred as the main problem. In reagrd of this, experts warned that young people were turning towards anabolic steroids more for an increase in self-confidence.
Anabolic steroids are generally used by athletes and bodybuilders. But during the survey, various evidences of extensive use of drugs by young professionals, building-site workers and even by students came out in the light. The charity showed a sign of warning and said that young men saw drugs as an easy alternative to gain muscled toned physique. It also said that the supply of Class C drug, a human growth hormone, is an illegal act.
From BBC:
The use of anabolic steroids is becoming mainstream as young men turn to the drugs to boost self-confidence and improve body image, experts warn.
The charity DrugScope found steroid abuse was a significant problem in 11 out of 20 towns and cities it surveyed.
The drugs have traditionally been used by elite athletes and bodybuilders.
But DrugScope found evidence of widespread use by young professionals, building-site workers and students for purely aesthetic reasons.
Young people see the drugs as an easy way to achieve a muscled, toned physique, the charity warned.
Supply of the Class C drug, a human growth hormone, is illegal, but possession is not.
Side effects of steroid misuse in men include reduced sperm count, kidney and liver problems, high blood pressure and increased aggression.
Chief executive of DrugScope, Martin Barnes said that the rise in the number of young men misusing steroids was an extremely worrying issue and various severe risks were associated with steroid misuse, but people might ignore the dangers or not seek help because they did not consider themselves drug users.
The DrugScope survey also found evidence for increased use of heroin and crack cocaine- a practice known as “speedballing.” The practice is so common in south London that the combined substances are treated similar to a drug in its own right.
Steroids misuse lead to various side effects, such as reduced sperm count, high blood pressure, increased aggression and kidney and liver problems. Risk of occurrence of HIV and hepatitis B and C is also quite high among the injectors.
