Defensive lineman Shaun Smith was released from his contract with Detroit Lions last Saturday, and received a four game suspension due to violation of NFL’s anabolic steroid policy.
Smith was signed by Detroit Lions just last August 2009 following his release from Cleveland Browns.
He played with the Browns from March 2007 until August 2009 when he was trimmed in order for the team to reach the 53-player maximum for the regular season. It was also rumored that his release from the team was due to a fight between him and the team’s quarterback Brady Quinn.
He signed a $1 million deal with the Lions, however, veteran salaries are not guaranteed until a player is included in the opening weekend roster for the season.
After his release last Saturday, an estimated six teams have contacted him but Smith informed them that he needed to serve his four-game suspension during the first four weeks of the season. If ever they were interested in signing him, he will be available by the 5th week of the season.
Smith cleared that he took water pills, an over-the-counter weight loss supplement and not anabolic steroids.
However, the league still bans the substance because it can mask steroid use.
