Steroids Found On Most Sports-Supplements

By admin | May 19, 2009

Recent studies exposed that most Americans, especially teenagers who use steroids continuously increase for the past two decades. This rapid growth of the supplement industry was believed to have resulted from the deceitful marketing strategies of supplement manufacturers.

According to the report of David Epstein and George Dohrmann, 25 percent of the 58 sports supplements tested contained steroids or stimulants that had been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. More so, several studies showed that 12 percent of boys and 8 percent of girls have reported using steroids or dietary supplements on a weekly basis. These results were obtained because these dubious supplements are readily available in local drugstores and online shops since FDA need not to approve these products. Some supplements that contain steroids are weight loss supplements and workout boosters.

From MercuryNews.com:

America should get its head out of the sand and face up to the growing use of steroids and questionable dietary supplements by adolescents.

In credible studies, 12 percent of boys and 8 percent of girls have reported using steroids or dietary supplements on a weekly basis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has documented that steroid use among high school athletes has more than doubled in the past two decades. And that may not include those who use them inadvertently with dietary supplements, some of which now appear to include them.

In today’s issue of Sports Illustrated, David Epstein and George Dohrmann report on a study that found 25 percent of the 58 sports supplements tested contained steroids or stimulants that had been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Of particular concern are weight-loss aids and workout boosters.

Supplements don’t have to be approved by the FDA.

In relation to this problem, President Barack Obama has stated that FDA needs to be revamped. He also appealed that the agency should regulate the supplement industry.
